U.S. Air Force Awards SBIR Phase II Contract to SlateSafety

SlateSafety, Inc. has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the United States Air Force. As a result, the SlateSafety team will accelerate deployment of SlateSafety’s BioTrac Platform, a Real-Time Biometric Internet of Things (IoT) System across the Air Force.

The Air Force currently has the ability to monitor the health of its hardware systems but lacks the ability to supervise the real-time health of its personnel. Military personnel commonly reach dangerous levels of heat strain and physical exertion. In addition to performance decreases, overexertion leads to injuries that are especially dangerous when there is no line-of-sight contact between team members.

SlateSafety’s BioTrac Platform solves this problem. By wearing an arm-worn device, Air Force personnel enable authorized officials to view their critical vitals such as heart rate, core-body temperature, and exertion in real-time, with the ability to narrow in on individuals in distress while supervising the group. The platform acts as an early-warning system for heat strain and overexertion that can be used to prevent injuries. Additionally, data collected can be used to analyze the effectiveness of training regimens and predict long-term health trends at both the individual and team level.

“With this support from the U.S. Air Force, we are able to rapidly adapt and deploy our BioTrac Platform to select Air Force bases across the nation,” said Zachary Braun, SlateSafety CEO and Principal Investigator for this award. “We are incredibly honored and excited to execute this contract and bring passive real-time biometric monitoring to the military.”

AFRL and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research process in an attempt to speed up the experience, broaden the pool of potential applicants, and decrease bureaucratic overhead. Beginning in SBIR 18.2, and now in 19.1, the Air Force has begun offering ‘Special’ SBIR topics that are faster, leaner, and open to a broader range of innovations.
